JCT College of Engineering and Technology | 15 October 2025
Seminar Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, JCT College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, organized a technical seminar entitled “Importance of CAD Software and Its Applications for Mechanical Engineers” on 15 October 2025.
The seminar was conducted to impart fundamental knowledge of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and help students understand its growing importance in modern mechanical industries.
Objective of the Seminar
The primary objective of the seminar was to strengthen students' understanding of CAD technologies and demonstrate their practical applications across mechanical design, manufacturing and product development.
The program provided participants with insights into how digital design tools enable engineers to create accurate models, improve design efficiency, collaborate effectively and develop optimized engineering solutions.
Welcome Address
Dr. M. Vijaya Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, delivered the welcome address and welcomed the gathering. Following this, Mr. R. Mahendran, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, invited the Chief Guest for the technical session.
Role of CAD in Modern Mechanical Engineering
The resource person explained the importance and significance of CAD software in mechanical industries. CAD has become an essential engineering tool for transforming design concepts into accurate digital models that can be analyzed, modified and prepared for manufacturing.
Through CAD-based workflows, engineers can visualize components and assemblies before physical production, allowing design issues to be identified and corrected during the development stage.
Precision Through 2D & 3D Modelling
A key topic discussed during the seminar was the ability of CAD software to create highly accurate 2D drawings and 3D models with exact dimensions.
Dimensional accuracy is essential in mechanical engineering because errors during the design stage can affect manufacturing, assembly and the performance of the final product. CAD allows engineers to refine designs digitally and improve overall design precision.
Applications of CAD Software
The seminar highlighted the wide range of applications of CAD technologies throughout the mechanical engineering design and development process.
- Creation of precise 2D engineering drawings
- Development of detailed 3D models
- Mechanical component and product design
- Visualization of designs before manufacturing
- Optimization of engineering designs
- Sharing of digital models and engineering data
- Development of efficient and sustainable products
Enabling Digital Collaboration
Another important advantage discussed was the ability of CAD systems to facilitate seamless collaboration between engineering teams.
Digital models and design data can be easily shared among team members, suppliers and manufacturers regardless of their location. This enables stakeholders to review designs, communicate modifications and work together more efficiently throughout the product development process.
CAD & Sustainable Product Development
The seminar also highlighted the role of CAD technologies in supporting sustainable engineering practices. Digital design tools allow engineers to evaluate and optimize products before they enter the manufacturing stage.
Engineers can use CAD-based approaches to reduce unnecessary material consumption, improve energy efficiency and develop optimized designs. These capabilities can contribute to lower material waste and the creation of more sustainable engineering products.
