JCT INSTITUTIONS CELEBRATES PINK DAY TO PROMOTE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
Coimbatore, November 4: The Women's Empowerment Cell of JCT Institutions, comprising JCT College of Engineering and Technology, JCT Arts and Science College, and JCT Polytechnic College, organised a special Pink Day Celebration to create awareness about breast cancer and emphasise the importance of women's health, early detection, and preventive healthcare. The programme was held at the JCTCET Seminar Hall, bringing together the management, academic leaders, faculty members, and students to spread awareness about one of the most significant health concerns affecting women worldwide.
The event was organised with the objective of educating young women about breast cancer, its risk factors, warning signs, early detection methods, available treatment options, and the importance of regular health check-ups. The celebration also aimed to encourage open conversations about women's health and eliminate the hesitation and stigma often associated with discussing breast cancer.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. S. Manoharan, Senior Principal, JCT Institutions, who welcomed the dignitaries, chief guest, faculty members, and students. He highlighted the importance of organising awareness programmes within educational institutions and acknowledged the role of the Women's Empowerment Cell in creating a supportive environment that encourages students to understand and prioritise their health and well-being.
The function was presided over by Thiru R. Gautaman, Vice Chairman and Trustee, and Thiru R. Durga Shankar, Secretary and Trustee, JCT Institutions. Their presence added significance to the occasion and reflected the institution's commitment to promoting social responsibility, women's empowerment, and health awareness among the student community.
The highlight of the celebration was the special awareness session delivered by the chief guest, Dr. Prema Subramaniam, Consultant in Breast Imaging and Interventions, GEM Hospital, Coimbatore. With her professional expertise and experience in the field of breast imaging and interventions, she provided valuable insights into breast cancer and the importance of being aware of its symptoms and risk factors.
During her address, Dr. Prema Subramaniam explained the various factors that may contribute to the development of breast cancer. She emphasised that awareness of the disease is essential for identifying possible warning signs and seeking timely medical attention. She also discussed common symptoms, including the presence of lumps in the breast or underarm, unusual changes in breast size or shape, changes in the appearance of the skin, nipple discharge, and other noticeable abnormalities. She encouraged students and faculty members not to ignore unusual changes and to consult qualified healthcare professionals whenever necessary.
A major focus of her presentation was the importance of early detection in the effective management and treatment of breast cancer. She explained the role of breast self-awareness, clinical breast examinations, and appropriate screening procedures in identifying abnormalities at an early stage. She also highlighted the importance of consulting medical specialists and following recommended screening practices based on individual health conditions and risk factors.
The chief guest further elaborated on the preventive measures and healthy lifestyle practices that can contribute to overall well-being. She encouraged participants to maintain a balanced diet, engage in regular physical activity, avoid unhealthy habits, and remain attentive to changes in their bodies. She clarified that while certain lifestyle practices can help reduce health risks, no preventive measure can guarantee complete protection against breast cancer. Regular medical consultation and timely diagnosis remain essential.
Dr. Prema Subramaniam also provided an overview of the various treatment options available for breast cancer. She explained that treatment approaches may differ depending on the stage of the disease, the patient's health condition, and other medical factors. Her session helped participants understand that advancements in medical science have improved the possibilities for diagnosis and treatment, reinforcing the importance of seeking medical advice without delay.
One of the most engaging aspects of the programme was the interactive question-and-answer session. Students and faculty members actively participated and raised several questions regarding breast cancer symptoms, screening procedures, diagnosis, treatment, and preventive healthcare. Dr. Prema Subramaniam patiently addressed their queries and provided clear, informative responses. The interaction helped dispel common misconceptions, encouraged participants to discuss health-related concerns without hesitation, and made the session more informative and meaningful.
Earlier in the programme, Mrs. P. Mangayakarasi, Head of the Department of Science and Humanities, JCT Polytechnic, introduced the chief guest and highlighted her professional expertise in breast imaging and interventions. Her introduction provided the audience with an insight into the guest speaker's medical background and achievements.
