Meeting Overview
The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at JCT College of Engineering and Technology (JCTCET) conducted the Board of Studies (BoS) Meeting for B.E. Electronics and Communication Engineering on 13 February 2026 at the JCTCET Seminar Hall.
The meeting focused on reviewing and strengthening the curriculum and syllabi to ensure academic relevance, practical learning, industry alignment, and preparedness for emerging technologies.
Opening of the Board of Studies Meeting
Dr. S. Karthikumar, Chairman of the Board of Studies, commenced the meeting by welcoming the members and introducing the external experts participating in the academic discussions.
The Chairman presented the suggestions received during the previous Board of Studies meeting, along with the corrections that had been implemented. The updated curriculum and syllabi were subsequently presented to the members for review.
He also presented the syllabi for all courses offered in the fifth and sixth semesters, which had been prepared by the internal Board of Studies members.
Key Focus of the Meeting
The discussions focused on ensuring that the B.E. ECE curriculum remains aligned with current technological advancements, industry requirements, higher education opportunities, and student placement needs.
The Board members reviewed various domains of the curriculum and provided recommendations related to VLSI, chip design, signal processing, nanoelectronics, IoT, biomedical engineering, space technologies, practical learning, and industry collaboration.
Key Recommendations from the Board Members
- The Anna University nominee recommended including the latest editions of textbooks and reference books in the syllabi.
- It was suggested that, depending on the learning strategy and requirements of students, the total hours allocated for integrated subjects may be maintained below 45 hours where appropriate.
- Experts recommended the use of the Cadence tool for VLSI and chip design to provide students with relevant practical exposure.
- The expert team suggested avoiding specific brand names such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi in the syllabus and recommended using broader terminology related to microcontrollers and embedded platforms.
- The industry expert recommended incorporating topics such as RTL Design, Functional Verification, Physical Design, Static Timing Analysis, and Verilog into the VLSI syllabus wherever appropriate.
- Experts recommended including Fundamentals of Nanoelectronics within the VLSI domain and moving Wide Bandgap Devices from the VLSI domain to the Sensor Technologies and IoT domain.
- The members suggested establishing additional Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with relevant organizations to strengthen student placement opportunities and industry interaction.
- In Domain II – Signal Processing, experts suggested combining Image Processing and Speech Processing into a single integrated subject.
- For Semesters V and VI, experts recommended clearly identifying and including mandatory courses within the curriculum.
- In Domain VI – Space Technologies, experts suggested introducing relevant concepts related to Airbus technology.
- The Board recommended considering future industry requirements while allocating subjects and designing courses to improve student placement readiness.
- Industry experts discussed the involvement of recruiters in curriculum and syllabus development to ensure stronger alignment with industry requirements. The Chairman provided a detailed explanation regarding the existing process.
- Experts recommended including more practical-oriented experiments in the Biomedical domain to strengthen hands-on learning.
- The members recommended reviewing the syllabi, course outcomes, and assessment structure to ensure appropriate alignment with Bloom's Taxonomy.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
A significant part of the discussion focused on preparing students for emerging opportunities in the electronics and semiconductor industries. The Board emphasized strengthening the curriculum with contemporary concepts in VLSI, chip design, nanoelectronics, IoT, signal processing, biomedical engineering, and space technologies.
The recommendations also emphasized greater practical exposure and the integration of relevant tools and technologies to help students connect theoretical concepts with real-world engineering applications.
Industry and Placement Alignment
The Board members emphasized the importance of aligning the curriculum with evolving industry requirements. Discussions included greater participation from industry experts and recruiters in curriculum development and identifying subjects that can strengthen students' technical and placement readiness.
The members also recommended establishing additional industry MoUs to enhance collaboration, technical exposure, training opportunities, internships, and placements for students.
Curriculum and Syllabus Recommendation
Following detailed discussions and recommendations, the Board of Studies of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering recommended the curriculum and the fifth- and sixth-semester syllabi of the B.E. Electronics and Communication Engineering program for students admitted from the Academic Year 2025–2026 under Autonomous Regulations 2024.
The curriculum and syllabi, incorporating the modifications suggested during the meeting, were recommended for submission to the Academic Council for approval.
Meeting Outcome
The Board of Studies meeting provided valuable academic and industry inputs for strengthening the B.E. ECE curriculum. The recommendations focused on creating a future-ready academic framework that balances theoretical knowledge, practical skills, emerging technologies, industry expectations, and student career opportunities.
